Steering box upgrade??

Postby NissanNut » Wed Mar 31, 2010 6:51 pm

Well I found a used 97 d21 steering box on ebay for $70 shipped. Apparently 94-97 have better internals and more power. I have driven 94+ compared to my 92 and 93 there is a difference. Since I already have a 2004 ps pump I thought I would try this bolt on upgrade.

Should be interesting.

Is it the same as the D21 2.4l box?

There all the same 4 or 6cyl.

ITEM FITS -- #Interchange 58808 ──────────────────────────────┐

│ NISSAN PICKUP 96-97 Power Steering, (4 cyl), 4x4 │

Mine has some play in it also. I have been trying to adjust. The adjuster screw on top is only adjusting steering tension and not backlash. The 94 fsm shows two styles of boxes. One with adjustable backlash via screw on top. The other style via adding shims inside. I have adjusted backlash in the old boxs, 85 and 74. But it looks like I need to add shims to rebuild this 93 box. ^&confsed

Well it just arrived. Its KOYO brand. It looks totally different than mine. Only thing that may be an issue is banjo connections are 14mm and mine are 16mm. I think the hose will not leak. Ill give it a shot. Worse case install a 94+ hose.

You can easily upgrade to a 91-93 pathy pure bolton. The truck box is 94-97.

Well I ended up using a new $49 14mm hose for a 95 pathy. All the new stuff is 14mm banjo at the box. 16mm at the pumps.

Wow what a difference.
:dance :dance :dance
I just hauled a load of trees to the dump and the steering is so different. It feels so much better. I need another one of these new boxs for the pathy. I think I will try a d22 box. They look identical except alloy at the top. I bet they will bolt right in.

i have a 92 box currently, but i think it is leaking. so the newest box i can get that is the same but better is from a 97 D21? i need the box to be able to be modified for hydraulic assist as well, and match my pitman arm and match my frame holes.

Yes. The 91-04 pitman is much bigger splines. I need to recount them.

Pretty sure an d22 box will bolt right in just need to try one. We need to replace the one in MArcus' truck. Its my old 93 box so Ill find a much newer one.
